Deputy Dave Bazylak Earns Life Saving Award for Saving Swimmer in the Gulf: On June 1st, Deputy David Bazylak got a call of a distressed swimmer behind Sandpiper Cove Condominiums OCSO dispatch advised two people were caught in a rip current 100 yards out in the Gulf Both were trying to swim against the rip current in an attempt to make it back to shore Several bystanders tried to enter the water to help but were advised it was too dangerous When Deputy Bazylak’s arrived he immediately grabbed his rescue can from his truck and ran down the beach to locate the distressed swimmers Deputy Ariel Planck also got on scene to help Deputy Bazylak spotted them and noticed the male appeared to be out of the rip current and standing on a sand bar He then spotted a female still in the current and trying to swim against it Deputy Bazylak and Deputy Planck yelled to her to tell her to swim parallel to shore, but she was struggling to keep her head above water With no lifeguards on duty, Deputy Bazylak, who had life guard training throughout his several years with the Beach Unit, removed his gear and entered the water without hesitation He quickly swam out to the female with the rescue can so she could keep her head above the water and rest Deputy Bazylak was able to keep her calm while he began towing her back in Destin Fire Rescue arrived and sent out a fireman with a rescue board He paddled out to Deputy Bazylak and helped put the female swimmer, who was extremely tired and suffering from water inhalation, on the board to take her safely to shore The timespan from the initial call to dispatch - to when the swimmer was back on shore - was about fourteen minutes Due to Deputy Bazylak’s quick reactions and dedication to his job, he successfully prevented a tragedy from occurring For his actions, he was presented the OCSO Life Saving Award!
